North Al Batinah Governorate and South Al Batinah Governorate occupy a vital geographic position on the northern coast of the Sultanate of Oman, overlooking the Sea of Oman. They stretch from Khatmat Al Milaha in the north to Ras Al Hamra in the south, and are bounded by the foothills of the Western Hajar Mountains to the west and the Sea of Oman to the east.

North Al Batinah Governorate includes the wilayats of Sohar, Shinas, Liwa, Saham, Al Khaboura, and Al Suwaiq. The city of Sohar is considered the governorate’s regional center. It is about 230 km from Muscat, the capital, and it was also the capital of Oman before the advent of Islam.

North Al Batinah Governorate is distinguished by the presence of some rare trees, such as the Maswah tree in Liwa and the Dibaj tree in Al Suwaiq. As for the most important traditional industries for which the governorate is known, they include the making of khanjars and swords, shipbuilding, pottery, ceramics, leather goods, and Omani halwa.

**Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Sohar** is a prominent Islamic religious and architectural landmark. It is distinguished by its intricate decorative designs, magnificent large blue dome, and beautifully landscaped gardens that attract visitors from within Oman and abroad.

**Wadi Al Hawasinah** is located in the Wilayat of Al Khaburah and winds through mountain ranges amid breathtaking natural scenery. The wadi is rich in sidr trees, date palms, and ancient Omani aflaj that flow with fresh water, making it one of the area's most beautiful natural attractions.

Liwa Fort is located in the Wilayat of Liwa and is an important heritage landmark that reflects the traditional Omani military architecture once used to protect the coastal areas and surrounding oases.
