It is one of the main governorates in the Sultanate of Oman. It is distinguished by its important geographic location, which connects the coast and the interior, making it a center of civilization and trade throughout the ages. The governorate includes many historic cities and villages and is considered one of the governorates that embraces a rich cultural heritage and great economic importance. The governorate includes nine main wilayats: Nizwa (the governorate’s center and cultural capital), Bahla, Manah, Al Hamra, Adam, Izki, Samail, Bidbid, and Al Jabal Al Akhdar.

It is home to many globally registered archaeological landmarks, most notably Bahla Fort, which is listed as a World Heritage Site, Nizwa Fort, which was once the capital of Oman, and Jabrin Fort. It is known for its unique mountain destinations such as Al Jabal Al Akhdar and Jebel Shams (the highest mountain peak in the Sultanate), in addition to unique natural landmarks such as Al Hoota Cave.

The governorate is considered a major agricultural center thanks to Oman’s historic aflaj irrigation system, and it produces premium agricultural crops such as pomegranates, roses, and olives in Al Jabal Al Akhdar, as well as traditional handicrafts like pottery and silverwork.

Oman Across Ages Museum is a cultural landmark and an iconic architectural masterpiece located in the Wilayat of Manah, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, near Al Shumoukh Castle. The museum documents the history of the land of Oman spanning approximately 800 million years, showcasing its diverse geological and historical eras, leading up to the Blessed Renaissance and offering a vision of the Sultanate's future through advanced interactive and digital exhibition technologies.

Nizwa Fort, also known as "Al Shahba", is one of the oldest and most prominent historic forts in the Sultanate of Oman. Located in the heart of the Wilayat of Nizwa in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, it is a unique masterpiece of military architecture and the country's most visited national landmark. The fort is distinguished by its massive circular tower, which was filled with earth and stones to absorb the impact of cannon fire. The tower stands 24 meters high and has an external diameter of 43 meters.

Jabal Hatt, locally known as the Eastern Mountain, is one of the most prominent natural tourist destinations in the Wilayat of Al Hamra, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. Renowned for its cool and refreshing climate throughout the year, the mountain serves as an ideal summer retreat for visitors seeking to escape the heat.

Al Jabal Al Akhdar (The Green Mountain) is a district of the Wilayat of Nizwa in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. Rising to approximately 3,000 meters above sea level, the mountain enjoys a unique climate characterized by mild, cool summers and cold winters. The mountain is renowned for its breathtaking terraced farms, where a variety of deciduous fruits are cultivated, including the famous Omani pomegranates, peaches, apricots, and walnuts.

Tanuf Waterfalls are one of the Sultanate of Oman’s most enchanting seasonal natural attractions. They are located in the village of Tanuf, within the Wilayat of Nizwa, at the foothills of Al Jabal Al Akhdar. The waterfalls are seasonal rather than perennial, flowing only after heavy rainfall on Al Jabal Al Akhdar and the surrounding areas, creating a spectacular natural landscape.

Nizwa Traditional Souq is one of the oldest and most renowned traditional marketplaces in the Sultanate of Oman. Located in the heart of the Wilayat of Nizwa in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, it stands adjacent to the historic walls of Nizwa Fort. The souq is home to several specialized market sections, including the Omani Halwa Market, the Dates and Spices Market, and the Pottery Market, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into Oman's rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship.

Bahla Fort is one of the oldest and largest earthen defensive forts in the Sultanate of Oman and the Arabian Peninsula. Located in the Wilayat of Bahla in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, it is recognized as a masterpiece of traditional Omani military architecture. In 1987, Bahla Fort became the first Omani landmark to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, reflecting its exceptional historical, cultural, and architectural significance.
