Al Buraimi Governorate is located in the northwestern corner of the Sultanate, along the border with the United Arab Emirates. Al Buraimi Governorate consists of three wilayats: Al Buraimi (the governorate center), Mahdah, and Al Sinaina.

In the past, it was known by historical names such as “Tuwam” and “the Land of Al Joo.” It is distinguished by its varied terrain, ranging from plains and desert lands to the Al Hajar mountain ranges. It borders Sohar and Dhank to the east, Mahdah to the north, Ibri to the south, and the city of Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates to the west.

Al Buraimi is famous for agriculture, especially palm trees and dates, thanks to its aflaj irrigation system and water springs. The governorate preserves many aspects of Omani heritage, including camel breeding and heritage events, and it includes a number of historical and archaeological sites that reflect the long history of human settlement in the region, such as Al Khandaq Fort.

Al Khandaq Fort in Al Buraimi dates back to the nineteenth century and is distinguished by its strategic location overlooking Wadi Al Jizzi. The fort was renovated during the reign of Imam Azzan bin Qais and was restored again in 1993. It has a square layout and includes several towers and rooms that served both military and civilian purposes. The fort is surrounded by a moat that was once filled with water to protect it from enemy attacks. It also features defensive elements such as fortified walls and loopholes, in addition to internal facilities including passageways, barracks, a prison, and a mosque, reflecting its important role in Oman's history.

Falaj Sa'ara, also known as Al Sa'rani, is a traditional irrigation system in Al Buraimi that was revived after being inactive for 15 years. The restoration project began through cooperation between local residents and government authorities, successfully transforming the falaj into a cultural and tourist attraction extending approximately six kilometers. After the water flow was restored, local farmers resumed cultivating date palms and other crops, achieving self-sufficiency in some agricultural products. The project later expanded to include tourism developments such as swimming pools and traditional gathering areas (majlis), making it a successful model for the restoration of other aflaj across Oman.

Wadi Al Hiyul is one of the most prominent natural tourist attractions in Mahdah, Al Buraimi Governorate, Sultanate of Oman. The wadi is renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty, flowing turquoise waters, and the abundance of freshwater and sulfur springs that emerge among its rocky passages, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and visitors seeking scenic landscapes.

Al Hilla Fort is one of the most prominent historical landmarks in Al Buraimi, Sultanate of Oman. The fort dates back several centuries and is believed to have been built to replace Al Khandaq Fort while serving as the center of the local administration. It is distinguished by its traditional Omani architectural design, featuring circular towers and high defensive walls that reflect the region's historic military architecture.

Hamasa Village is located in Al Buraimi Governorate and is considered one of the region's most important historical villages. It is known for its strategic location, having served as a major commercial and transportation hub linking Oman with neighboring countries. The village is home to significant historical landmarks, including Hamasa Tower, the old marketplace, traditional mud-brick houses, and historic mosques. In 2015, Hamasa was the site of archaeological excavations and research conducted jointly by Sultan Qaboos University, the Omani Ministry of Heritage and Culture, and Zayed University. The British explorer Wilfred Thesiger, who visited the village in the 1940s, described it as a center of the slave trade during that period.

Wasit is a town located in Wadi Al Jizzi in Al Buraimi Governorate and is considered one of the most prominent settlements of the Al Shawamis tribe. It extends across a wide area, combining modern neighborhoods with ancient historical landmarks that reflect its rich heritage. The town is supplied by a freshwater falaj that originates from Wadi Wasit, the largest tributary of Wadi Al Jizzi, supporting the cultivation of date palms, mangoes, and citrus fruits. Wasit is also home to an archaeological site dating back to the second millennium BCE, as well as historic towers and fortifications that demonstrate the depth of its cultural and historical legacy.

Marjib Fort is a historical landmark located in the Wilayat of Al Buraimi’s Hafeet Deputy Province. It stands as a testament to a rich history dating back to the reign of Sultan Sultan bin Ahmed Al Busaidi, as it was built in 1216 AH. This remarkable fort reflects the importance of Hafeet, which has witnessed significant development in recent years, further enhancing its historical and cultural significance in the region.

**Al Khuwairij Village** in Wadi Al Jizzi, Al Buraimi, is one of the region’s ancient historical villages, with its remaining آثار serving as a testament to its rich past. The village was once known for its abundant falaj, which originated from the Al Abila area. It also includes **Al Khuwairij Room**, which was restored by the Omani government, as well as an old historic mosque dating back nearly 300 years that has been renovated using modern restoration methods.
