South Al Sharqiyah Governorate represents the northeastern gateway of the Sultanate of Oman and overlooks the Arabian Sea. It borders the Sharqiyah Sands to the south and Al Dakhiliyah Governorate to the west. Its administrative center is the Wilayat of Sur. It includes five main wilayats: Sur, Al Kamil and Al Wafi, Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan, Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, and Masirah.

The governorate hosts major projects such as the liquefied natural gas project and the urea and ammonia fertilizer plant in the Wilayat of Sur. Its residents rely on marine fishing and sea-related industries as part of sustainable development initiatives. It is seeing infrastructure development through cooperation with specialized entities such as Sur Industrial City.

Fatah Al Khair Museum is a heritage museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history of traditional dhow building and Oman's distinguished maritime heritage in the city of Sur.

Al Sunaysilah Fort is one of the most prominent historical and defensive landmarks in the Wilayat of Sur, in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate of the Sultanate of Oman. The fort stands majestically atop a rounded hill, overlooking the coastline and the main route leading inland.
